Holiday Overview

Tiji festival falls on 15th, 16th and 17th of May. Tiji Festival is popularly celebrated among Tibetan Buddhist people in the Lo Manthang region of the Upper Mustang.

During the festival monks dress with their traditional customs and masks and perform dances and rituals that supposed to drive away evil spirits. Similarly, people from all over Mustang gather in Lo Manthang being dressed in their finery and celebrate this festival.

This festival is celebrated annually for three days marking the beginning of the harvest season with a belief to chase away the demons..As per the myth, Dorjo Jono, a deity fought a battle against his father to save the kingdom of Mustang from destruction. His father was a demon who caused terror among the people by creating shortage of water in such a barren land.

Dorjo Jono therefore beat his demon father and chased him away from the land of Mustang. Hence, Tiji festival symbolizes chasing of the demons to bring peace and prosperity.
